What is a bundle recount and how close does a general election result have to be?

The votes are in and political leaders are on the edge of their seats.

Exit polls predict that the 2019 general election will be clear cut but in some seats things are expected to be very close.

When votes are tight, a recount can be requested but in the event of a dead heat it could even be decided by a straw poll - such as in the Northumberland County Council elections in 2017 .

But how do recounts work and what is a bundle recount? Here's what you need to know.

What triggers a recount?

A recount can be requested by any candidate once the ballot papers have been counted. The returning officer has the right to reject an unreasonable request.

Is there a set margin which would trigger a recount?

No. It is at the discretion of the returning officer. However, if the returning officer feels there is a clear margin they will offer candidates and their agents the opportunity to inspect the bundles - this is a bundle recount. If the candidates accept, this is the end of the issue.

How many recounts can take place?

Often there is just one but there are no formal limits to how many recounts. Again, this is at the returning officer's discretion.
