What is 4/20 - and why is it celebrated every year across the globe?

4/20 - or April 20 - to people who don't celebrate is an annual holiday where people across Ireland and the globe celebrate marijuana and campaign for it to be legalised.

While marijuana has been decriminalised or legalised in certain European countries like Portugal and Holland, it still remains illegal in Ireland.

But as the campaign to legalise grows in voice and numbers year on year, here's everything you need to know about 4/20.

What is 4/20 and why is it celebrated on April 20?

4/20 is a holiday that celebrates marijuana.

But the origins of why it is celebrated on April 20 are a mystery.

One theory comes from the former editor of a marijuana-focused news outlet.

Steve Hager told the New York Times that it could have been started by a group of high school students in the States in the 70s.

According to Hager, students in California would smoke weed at 4:20pm every day.

4/20 would eventually become the code for when students wanted to smoke weed.

Protests in Ireland

This Saturday, April 23, a protest will take place at the Wellington Monument in the Phoenix Park, where participants will campaign for the legalisation of cannabis.

It's being organised by Ireland's Major Group for Cannabis Reform. with speakers including MEP Luke Ming Flanagan set to appear.

Medicinal use in Ireland

In June 2021, the medicinal use of cannabis via prescription was legalised in Ireland. Some cannabis products were legalised for medicinal use previously, but this new law meant patients could be reimbursed for it.

However, only people with certain conditions qualify for the scheme.
