‘What in the horror movie’: It’s the morning of her best friend’s wedding. An unexpected home repair has people saying they should cancel it

Every wedding has its hiccups, but this one looks straight out of a horror movie. A TikToker is going viral after posting a video of her best friend’s big day, starting with a full-blown disaster.

The clip shows a burst pipe flooding an entire apartment just hours before the ceremony. As water gushes across the floor, the text overlay reads, “POV: it’s the morning of your wedding day.” The caption then adds, “Rain on your wedding day is good luck, right?” The internet, however, was less optimistic.

Commenters flooded the post (pun intended) with warnings that this wasn’t bad luck—it was a cosmic red flag. Some said the couple should take it as a “sign from the universe” to call the whole thing off. Others were just praying the vows wouldn’t involve ‘for better or for wetter.’

Divine Intervention?

Vanessa’s (@vunuh) 25-second clip shows a debacle no one could ever foresee. The filmed calamity has gained a whopping 1,400,000 views and almost 1,500 comments. The entire video is just stitched clips of an overflowing apartment due to a pipe that burst in the ceiling of the living room. Vanessa shows a makeup trolley’s drawers and items absolutely filled with mud-colored water. The living room couches? Drenched. The shoe rack by the front door? Inundated. Endless comments on Vanessa’s clip have one conclusion: this is a sign one must not ignore.

What is the Burnt Toast Theory?

One of the comments simply says, “Burnt toast theory!!!!!!!!” For the uninitiated, the Burnt Toast Theory is a concept based on reframing. “For example, something as simple as burning your toast in the morning, though it might be frustrating and inconvenient, might actually have happened for a good reason. The idea is that these frustrating situations may have a domino effect in your life — setting you up for something positive or keeping you from other problematic situations,” according to the Cleveland Clinic. Therefore, Vanessa’s viewers seem to suggest that this disaster happened as a way to prevent the marriage.

One viewer’s comment with 25,000 likes says, “Did you ask god to show u a sign?” While another says, “I would assume it was a sign I shouldn’t get married.”

Another viewer references the theory, saying, “Burnt toast theory just happened last night, we stopped to wait for a cop to get out of the area and then got on the highway and there was just a crash a few minutes before we entered the highway.”

Not everyone thought it was a sign

A small number of commenters choose a less demanding avenue to join in on the conversation. One says, “Or maybe sh-t happens sometimes.”

One even went in the opposite direction and said, “Some cultures say that when it rains on your wedding day, it symbolizes all the tears of the women that wanted your man, but you were the one that got him.”

Lastly, one viewer shares, “If you get through this, I have full confidence yall will do wonderful in life together.” Vanessa then responds, “I literally said this in my maid of honor speech.” Vanessa also posted follow-up TikToks sharing clips from the wedding that continued without a hitch.

The Mary Sue has covered stories that also speak of signs you should look out for before getting married. TikTok famous wedding planner Birdie (@birdie1216) has shared some red flags that happen before a wedding that showcase the couple will get divorced later.
