What/If on Netflix: Everything you need to know about the mysterious thriller starring Renee Zellweger

Renee Zellweger will make her Netflix debut in What/If, a psychological thriller that aims to grapple with big questions about morality and free will.

The star, who is best known for her iconic role in the Bridget Jones movies, plays a mysterious motivational speaker who is not above using her powers of persuasion to manipulate others.

The ten-part series marks the Oscar-winning star’s first foray onto the small screen: her only other television credit was a voice role on King of the Hill back in 2001.

Here’s everything you need to know about the “neo-noir social thriller”:

What is What/If all about?

New direction: Zellweger appears in her first small screen role (Adam Rose/Netflix)

According to Netflix, What/If explores the ripple effects of what happens when “acceptable” people start behaving in an unacceptable way.

Shadowy benefactor Anne (Zellweger) makes a dubious, morally murky offer to a young newlywed couple who are struggling financially. If they accept, it could drastically change their lives for the better - but it might just cause their relationship to collapse in the process.

The trailer sees Zellweger’s character ask: “What if I made you an offer too extraordinary to refuse?

“For anything, and anyone, to be yours for the taking. The players are all arranged. What would you risk for a chance to have it all?”

The series was written by Revenge creator Mike Kelley, who has previously also penned scripts for teen drama The OC.

Who is in the cast of What/If?

Newlyweds: Blake Jenner and Jane Levy play a young couple (Saeed Adyani/Netflix)

Joining Zellweger are former Glee star Blake Jenner and Castle Rock’s Jane Levy, who play newlyweds Lisa and Sean.

Danielle Pineda, Tyler Ross, Juan Castano, Louis Herthum and Samantha Marie Ware also take supporting roles in the series

How to watch What/If

All 10 episodes will be available to stream on Netflix from Friday, May 24, just in time for the bank holiday weekend.
