Arsenal legend Ian Wright is delighted that Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has received his first-ever England call-up ahead of next month’s UEFA Nations League matches.
The Three Lions take on Iceland and Denmark in September, as international football returns for the first time since lockdown.
Gareth Southgate named his 24-man squad for the back-to-back games - and included Phillips for the first time following his fantastic season with Leeds last time out.
Phillips was integral in Leeds’ title-winning campaign and his form has been deservedly rewarded with a call-up.
Wright, who scored 113 goals in the top-flight during his playing days, clearly feels like Phillips’ place in the England squad is a long time coming.
The former Arsenal striker tweeted: “Finally!!! @Kalvinphillips”
The 24-year-old made 40 appearances for Marcelo Bielsa’s men in all competitions last season, scoring two goals along the way.
Since moving to Elland Road in July 2014, Phillips has made over 150 appearances.
But it was last season where he really announced himself as an England-level midfielder.
