What history tells us about the Championship's opening fixtures with Derby County tipped to start well

The opening day of the new Championship season is just around the corner.

In just a few days the second tier will return as newcomers Luton Town welcome Middlesbrough in Friday's curtain-raiser.

Clubs up and down the second tier will be desperate to get off to a good start.

Whether it’s to take the first step towards promotion or to survival, every team heads into the first weekend refreshed and full of optimism.

Last season, Leeds United took 17 points from their eight games in August as they stood proud at the top of the Championship table.

Marcelo Bielsa's men will be hoping for a similar start this time around, as they bid to go one step better this season.

But, which teams have the best record of backing up that new season optimism with an opening day win?

Betoclock have taken a look at the last 10 years and found that Derby County fans should be feeling the most optimistic ahead of their opening game with Huddersfield.

The Rams have won on opening weekend more than any other Championship side in the last 10 years, winning five, drawing five and losing none.

And there must be something in the air in the East Midlands, because the team with the next best record are Nottingham Forest, who have claimed 18 points from their openers in the last 10 years, winning five, drawing three and losing twice.

Of course, those teams’ records have been helped by the fact they haven’t spent any time in the Premier League during the decade studied.

And that’s also helped Sheffield Wednesday, who are also among the best performers on opening weekend, the Owls amassing just one less point that Forest.

Among the worst sides are Stoke City and Blackburn Rovers.

The Potters are the worst of the two, winning only once, drawing three and losing six times.

And Blackburn are only just ahead, winning once, drawing four times and losing five times,

Though, the Lancashire club’s decade has included two relegations, one from the Premier League and the other from the Championship.
