What history says about Leeds United's top flight claims

Leeds United are one of only 15 clubs in English football can claim to be historically top flight sides.

United have finished an average of 19.6th in their Football League and Premier League history.

That's a higher average than all but 12 other clubs in English football.

Liverpool have the highest average at 8.1th in the league.

Arsenal are second with an average of 8.6th, while Everton are in third place with an average of 9.7th and Manchester United are fourth with an average of 10.2th.

Only 11 other sides have an average league position of 20th or higher.

Aston Villa have the fifth highest average, 11.8th, while Tottenham are sixth with 12.0th.

Chelsea come next with an average of 13.2th followed by Manchester City (13.7th), Newcastle (14.2th), Sunderland (16.0th), West Brom (17.8th), West Ham (18.5th), Leeds (19.6th), Blackburn (19.9th) and Derby (20.0th).

Wolves just miss out on top flight status with an average of 20.6th, as do Middlesbrough with an average of 20.9th.

Liverpool will hold onto top spot whatever happens this season.

If they were to finish 20th and Arsenal 1st then Liverpool’s average would drop to 8.2th while Arsenal’s would only rise to 8.5th.

Another league title win for Manchester City, meanwhile, would only lift their average up to 13.6th.
