What history says about Leeds United and West Brom's chances in 2019-20 season

Leeds United suffered play-off heartbreak on Wednesday night against Derby County, losing 4-2 at Elland Road.

That means the Whites are set for another campaign in the Championship after what has been an exceptional season for Marcelo Bielsa’s side - and one where they were top of the table for longer than any other club.

A stern task now lies ahead for Leeds next season as they seek to end a long wait for a return to the Premier League but history is not on their side - as only four sides who have lost in the Championship play-off semi-final have gone on to achieve promotion the following season.

Derby could make that five if they beat Aston Villa in the final at Wembley but it shows that things will not be easy for Leeds next term.

Here, we’ve identified how every side defeated in the play-off semi-finals have fared the following season.

Preston North End gave it a good go and finished within a point of reaching the play-offs but finished behind Southampton. Crystal Palace, meanwhile, had to settle for a mid-table finish in 12th.

2007/08

Wolves came agonisingly close to returning to the play-offs, missing out on goal difference to Watford by one goal. Southampton struggled massively though, avoiding relegation by just two points.

Reading struggled massively, finishing seven points short of the top-six, while Preston were closer to relegation to League One than they were to contending near the top of the pile.

2010/11

Nottingham Forest managed to seal a return to the play-offs but lost 3-1 on aggregate to Swansea City. Leicester City, meanwhile, finished eight points adrift of the top six.

Cardiff City returned from play-off heartbreak stronger and won the title but Birmingham City endured a difficult time, finishing the season in 12th.

2013/14

Leicester City went on to finish top in the season after losing in the play-offs, which suggested a turn in the tide, while Brighton also secured a top-six spot but lost at the same stage.

2014/15

Wigan Athletic suffered more than anyone else, going from the play-offs to relegation to League One. Brighton also struggled, dropping to 20th.

2015/16

Ipswich Town charged for the play-offs but finished five points short, while Brentford ended the campaign with a nine-point difference.

2016/17
