What have people in Castle Douglas set as their New Year's resolution?

It’s not just a new year but also the start of a new decade.

In the past few weeks, you can’t fail to have seen features on TV looking back at the lowlights and highlights of the past 10 years.

But now we’re into January, it’s time to look forward, rather than back.

A new year is a time for optimism, fresh starts and for making plans.

And while it may not be as popular a tradition as it once was, it’s also a time for making new year resolutions.

We asked people in Castle Douglas what their plans are for 2020.

Ken Gouge. (Jim McEwan)

Ken Gouge has recently retired from running the Jenny Wren Toy Shop and is now looking forward to a new lease of life free from the demands of work.

He said: “My resolution is to enjoy life and Galloway a bit more – to get out and about and do more stuff and to be more active.”

Carolyn Yates. (Jim McEwan)

Carolyn Yates’ resolution is one that should benefit the whole town.

She said: “I’m chairman of the development trust so mine is to keep making Castle Douglas an even better family place.

“Our aim is to make it a more family-friendly town.”

Robert McGoldrick. (Jim McEwan)

Dalbeattie man Robert McGoldrick said: “When you’re making a resolution you’re just about guaranteed to not keep it.

“Mine would be maybe to lose a bit of weight and other than that try to keep doing good when I can.”

Paul McCleary. (Jim McEwan)

Paul McCleary added: “Mine is to lose weight. I’ve put a bit on so I’m going to try to do something about that.

“I’ll go for more walks with my dogs and I’ve bought a turbo trainer for my bike, which seems like a good idea.”

Good luck to all four of our interviewees with their new year resolutions – they’ll be under extra pressure to keep them as all our readers now know what they are.
