What has Trump tweeted today? The latest Twitter posts from the US President and what they really mean

Donald Trump's Twitter account provides an extraordinary unfiltered insight into what the President is doing and thinking in real time.

He posts on the social media site almost every day, often very early in the morning or late at night, sharing both official White House business and personal opinion.

To get the latest analysis of what POTUS is sharing with the world, read our rolling coverage of his account below:

Mr Trump had claimed this morning that "much of the border wall" had already been built or restored despite his call for more funding.

Donald Trump said US homeland security officials will make a plea for a southern border wall in a White House meeting with congressional leaders on Wednesday, adding that he was open to working on a path to legal status for young illegal immigrants known as Dreamers.

Trump invited Democratic and Republican leaders in Congress to the White House for the border security briefing on the 12th day of a partial U.S. government shutdown triggered by his demand for $5bn in wall funding.

Department of Homeland Security officials will brief the congressional leaders, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said, on the last day that Trump's fellow Republicans will control both chambers of Congress.

The meeting is set for 3pm local time in the White House Situation Room, generally used for high-level security concerns such as military planning.

But the biggest issue is obviously the $5bn Mr Trump has requested in funding for a US-Mexico border wall, which has led to the partial government shutdown.

At the cabinet meeting the president said that the US "needs a physical barrier".
In a cabinet meeting that started around midday Mr Trump also spoke about a possible meeting with North Korea's Kim Jong-un over the destruction of Pyongyang's nuclear weapons.

Mr Trump said he received a "great" letter from Mr Kim and that he believed a meeting between the pair would happen soon.

It comes after Mr Kim said in his New Year's message that we would be willing to meet the US president, but that sanctions may put any progress at risk.

In other tweets the president has spoken about the need for lower petrol prices, concentrating on something tangible for voters as the stock market continues to be volatile.

Increases in the stock market had been one of the major ways Mr Trump had touted how his plan for the US economy was working. However, markets have faced historic falls in recent weeks, along with some rebounds.
First off Mr Trump hit out at a scathing opinion piece from Mr Romney, who has repeatedly criticised the president.

Donald Trump has been pre-occupied with two things during most of New Year's Day and today - the border wall and the associated government shutdown and Utah senator-elect Mitt Romney.
