What has caused the strange blue lights in the sky over Merseyside

Strange blue lights have once again caused a stir after being spotted in the sky over Merseyside.

New pictures of the glowing spots were sent to the ECHO on Thursday night by sharp-eyed skywatchers.

The lights were seen shortly before 10pm for around two minutes in Aigburth , before another reader reported seeing them moving slowly over Garston a short time later.

This is not the first time people across the region have questioned the origin of the lights.

Back in August , dozens of people took to social media to discuss them and what is causing it - with many joking it was an alien invasion.

Daniel Shaw, from  Belle Vale , was exploring an abandoned building in  Woolton  with friends when they noticed the strange light.

The 28-year-old   told the ECHO:   "I was with three friends, we are urban explorers and we normally do ghost hunting.

"We were in Woolton exploring an abandoned building.

"It moved really slowly across the sky from what looked like Speke to the Wirral and it was flickering.

"Another theory is the light should have shone through the cloud but it was behind the cloud. We were all shocked and amazed and a little apprehensive.

"We were there for ghost hunting and not for alien hunting."

Despite all the weird and wonderful theories behind the lights, the ECHO can confirm they are caused by a tamping train, which is laser guided.

A spokesperson for Network Rail said that the specialist train users lasers to to mark out an exclusion zone for the workforce and works to pack the ballast under the railway track to make them more durable.
