What happens with away goals if Championship play-off semi-finals end in draw as Fulham play Cardiff City

Away goals will not be a factor in the Championship play-off semi-finals.

Cardiff City headed to Fulham on Thursday evening with a 2-0 deficit after the first leg, and will face extra time and potentially penalties should the aggregate scores level out by full-time.

If two teams are level on aggregate after 180 minutes of football, the away goals rule means the team who has scored the greater proportion of their goals away from home progresses.

But, as away goals don't count in the play-off semi-finals, Cardiff would not, for example, progress through to the Wembley final if they finished 3-3 on aggregate.

The official EFL rules state: "The winner of a semi-finals is decided by the tie's aggregate score after the two legs. If the aggregate score is level at the end of the 90 minutes of the second leg, then an additional 30 minutes of extra time is played to try to create a winning team.

"If the score at the end of extra time is still level then the tie is decided by penalty kicks. Away goals do not count in the play-off semi final matches.

"The two winners from the semi-finals meet at a neutral venue in the final. The final must be decided on the day, so extra time and penalties may be carried out if the scores are level. The winner of the tie gains promotion to the league above the one they are currently in."
