What happens when Boris Johnson meets the Queen after winning the General Election?

The people of Britain have had their say in the winter General Election and Boris Johnson has been elected as the Prime Minister of the UK.

But it isn't official just yet.

The Queen has no say when it comes to politics, but as Head of State, The Monarch still has to undertake its constitutional duties.

Although the Prime Minister has been chosen by a vote carried out by the general public, the power is with the Queen to officially appoint the Prime Minister.

Boris Johnson was Britain's Prime Minister before the 2019 General Election, as elected by the members of the Conservative Party. Therefore Mr Johnson will continue in office as usual.

Later today, Her Majesty will have an audience with the new Prime Minister - which is simply a one-to-one meeting.

The Prime Minister will be called to Buckingham Palace for the audience, during which Her Majesty will ask to form a Government.

The Queen will continue to have these meetings on a weekly basis throughout her reign in order to discuss Government matters.
