What happens to TV schedule tonight? Soaps and comedies axed as Prince Philip dies

Friday night's TV schedule has undergone a major overhaul in response to the sad news of Prince Philip's death earlier today.

The Duke of Edinburgh's death at the age of 99 was confirmed at lunchtime today in a statement from Buckingham Palace.

Her Majesty said it was with 'deep sorrow' that she was announcing the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh who 'passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.'

Following the news, BBC and ITV paused their live programming to cut to rolling news coverage as the updates unfolded.

The changes to the TV schedule will continue into this evening.

ITV has also confirmed there will be no commercial breaks in their main channel coverage this evening.

The BBC revealed a major shake-up of the planned Friday night line-up, cancelling shows including EastEnders and Have I Got News For You.

The MasterChef final will also be rescheduled for a later date.

Instead the channel will air a BBC News Special running from 4pm until midnight.

While over on ITV, Friday night's episodes of Emmerdale and Coronation Street have also been axed to focus on the Royal news.

Between 7pm and 9pm the channel is sharing a documentary 'Prince Philip Fondly Remembered.'

Followed by another hour long special 'Philip: A Royal Life' before the ITV news resumes at 10pm.

The line-up of Channel 4 is remaining as planned with the latest episode of Gogglebox currently still scheduled to air at 9pm as usual.

Earlier in the day, both ITV and BBC cut their live programming to deliver the announcement on Prince Philip's death.

The BBC followed the official protocol by fading to black before playing God Save The Queen.

While over on ITV, This Morning was paused midway through an interview with Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford.

The husband and wife duo had just started interviewing Coronation Street star Alan Halsall when they received the news from a crew member behind the scenes.

"Alan, I'm sorry but I have to interrupt you for some very important news," said Eamonn.

"We now viewers have to end This Morning and go straight to the ITV News room for more," he added.

The screen immediately cut to ITV news where a broadcaster, Lucrezia Millarini, confirmed the sad news about the Duke of Edinburgh.
