What happens to luxury items worth millions of pounds seized from criminals

Millions of pounds worth of luxury items seized from criminals have gone under the hammer over the last year, giving lucky bidders a chance to get their hands on some exciting items.

Wilsons Auctions is responsible for selling off the ill-gotten gains seized by police forces around the country including Merseyside.

These luxury items, ranging from gold watches to designer handbags are auctioned off after they have been taken under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

This means the proceeds are returned into the public purse once criminals have been caught.

Over this last year alone, millions of pounds worth of items have appeared for auction, including a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Back in March, Wilsons online auction saw items such as luxury watches including Rolex, Cartier, Breitling and Ulysse as well as jewellery which were all seized by law enforcement agencies.

Also under the hammer were over 40 handbags and accessories by some of the world's biggest designer brands and Harley Davidson motorcycles as well as a Rockhopper Electric Bike.

Motorists looking for a unique addition for their cars could also place offers on the unique '1SBO' private licence plate.

A similar theme was seen in April when more luxury items such as Rolex watches, Tag Heuer watches and 18ct gold and diamond rings went up for sale.

Bidders could also get their hands on a range of high-end rubies, emeralds and sapphires.

Jewellery and watches as well as designer handbags are the most common items to appear before the online auctions over the years.

But in May, a bidding war broke out over a unique diamond tennis necklace, with a nearest retail value of £115,000 and a BMW M5.

Earlier this year, unusual items also included nine kilograms of gold bars and 22ct Asian Gold - worth over £400,000.

Other lots included a selection of Rolex watches, including a £50,000 platinum Rolex day date and a variety of luxury jewellery including a 18ct rose gold diamond tennis necklace 46ct worth £115,000, as well as two Audermars Piguet Royal Oaks watches from Cartier and Breitling.

Wilsons Auctions’ government sales coordinator, Michael Streight previously said: "Wilsons Auctions play an important role in realising a large quantity of assets on behalf of our government clients, which has seen us responsible in returning over £130 million back into the public purse in recent years.

"We are proud to facilitate auctions on behalf of our government and law enforcement agencies, which have seen significant growth across the group."
