What happens if your NCT is expired now or soon if you get stopped by gardai as centres start to reopen for bookings

Some NCT Centres have now reopened across the country as life begins to return to normality.

Anyone who needed to get their NCT done during the lockdown has had their deadline extended and won't face any fines if stopped by gardai.

Although you are expected to book your test as soon as you can.

Here's all you need to know about booking your NCT now that the restrictions have been eased.

How long is the NCT extension?

If you are due to submit your vehicle for an NCT between 28 March and 30 June, your test date has been extended for 4 months.

If you were due to submit your vehicle for an NCT before 28 March 2020, you may now book for a test. Some NCTS centres reopened from 8 June 2020.

For Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Test (CVRT) test, the extension is for 3 months.

What to do if you're arrested

Can I renew my tax while I wait?

You can renew your motor tax online without a current NCT or CVRT during this period.

What if I still need to get the underbody test done?

If you submitted your vehicle for an NCT earlier this year, and could not complete the test because the underbody of your car could not be inspected, you should continue to carry the Vehicle Inspection Report you received that says that your test was incomplete.
