What happens if you need the toilet while in the queue to see the Queen?

Thousands of people have made the journey to Westminster Hall to pay their respects to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Westminster Hall has been open 24 hours a day, since Wednesday, for crowds to view the Queen's coffin. Some people have waited for hours in the cold and rainy weather to say their final goodbyes.

A tweet from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport earlier today said the estimated queuing time was "at least 11.5 hours". Officials reportedly estimate 350,000 people will be able to view the Queen’s coffin before the queue closes to mourners.

With so many people waiting in such long queues, many are wondering how mourners will be able to access food and drinks, as well as go to the toilet.

But a complex logistical plan includes toilets, first aid and refreshments along the route. Hundreds of portable toilets have been brought in.

Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid queued for more than seven hours, alongside her mother. Sharing her experience in a tweet, she said: "The first part of the queue is for wristbands. Ours were given out at Tower Bridge about an hour after we began queuing. There is no queue jumping - people waited patiently for wristbands and once you have one you can leave the queue for snacks/loo stops & slip back in."

The ECHO understands there are more than 1,000 volunteers, stewards, marshals and police officers on hand at any one time as people queue for the Queen’s lying in state. There will be 779 professional stewards per shift, assisted by 100 civil service volunteer marshals, 40 adult scouts, and 30 members of the first aid nursing yeomanry, as well as Metropolitan Police officers.
