What happened when we confronted taxi driver who stopped on school zigzag lines

This was the moment we confronted a driver who stopped on a zigzag crossing outside a school.

This week the ECHO is running the Operation Zigzag campaign, which is looking to highlight the major issue of drivers stopping or parking in areas outside schools - causing dangers for children and families.

As part of our campaign, we sent reporters out to schools across Merseyside this morning, in a bid to try and catch drivers red handed - and speak to those being blighted by the problem every day.

Headteacher Bernard Cassidy has backed our campaign, he already sends staff out to try and catch people in the act.

This morning, Tom and the school's site manager 'Mr Mike' witnessed a private hire taxi dropping someone off on the zigzag and went over to speak to him about it.

As you can see in the video, the driver wasn't best pleased at being filmed - and strenuously claimed he had been asked to drop off there by his customer.

At one stage, he got quite animated with our reporter - and said he wasn't familiar with the area.

But as part of the campaign, we feel it is important to let people know that this kind of parking or stopping can be dangerous - and hopefully drivers like this won't do it again.

We have chosen to protect the driver's identity and take his claims that he genuinely wasn't aware of what was going on in good faith.

But it is a big problem at this school and others across the region.

St George's staff say said between three and four cars are usually caught parked or idling on zigzag lines on any given day – before and after hours.

Mr Cassidy said: "We are delighted to be part of the Echo's campaign.

"We do have a problem here. We are a large school, it's a narrow road.

"We are constantly battling on a daily basis with people both parking on the zig-zag lines and cars idling, keeping their engines running. So for us, it's a safety and a health issue for our children as well.

"We have the support of our school community but there are still a significant number of parents who provide us with challenges. We understand that parents are working, we know parking is limited in the area, but we are very much trying to work on solutions. The immediate area around the school should be a safe place for children.

"You can see the work we have done around different signage and children taking part in 'mini police' initiatives and speeding initiatives, and we are also working to ensure parents' voices are strong in promoting safety for children and their families as well."
