What happened when Chelsea loan star Ethan Ampadu made his Champions League debut for RB Leipzig

On a night where Chelsea drew 2-2 with Valencia, Ethan Ampadu made his first ever appearance in the Champions League.

The teenager, who is on loan at RB Leipzig this season, was handed a rare start alongside Dayot Upamecano in central defence against Benfica earlier in the week.

This was actually Ampadu first start for the Bundesliga outfit across any competition this season.

And he has Emil Forsberg to thank for ensuring his full Leipzig debut didn't end in defeat as the Sweden international struck twice in injury time to snatch a point for the hosts and book their place in the knockout rounds.

Interestingly, Ampadu wasn't on the pitch for either of the goals.

He was substituted early in the second half with Benfica leading 2-0 therefore he had to watch on from the bench as his teammates rescued the game and it remains to be seen if he starts against Paderborn at the weekend.

Looking ahead to the future and Ampadu admits he's keen to follow in the footsteps of Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Reece James in becoming a regular at Stamford Bridge.

"I want to show I don't have to go on another loan, go back to Chelsea and hopefully play more minutes there," he told The Sun . "That's the aim. It's what I want to do.

"At the moment, I have to train well, improve and get in the team and hopefully that will come for me for the next few years.

"There is positivity around Chelsea with all the younger players playing and it gives you a good feeling about it.

"Even last year or the year before when it was supposed they weren't playing young players you always wanted to be the one.

"Because we're all the same age we want to see each other do well. Of course you want to be on the pitch. They are good players."

Ampadu has found first-team opportunities hard to come by this season and there had been concerns that this dream loan move was turning into somewhat of a nightmare given the teenager's lack of game time.

However, football.london reported last month that Ampadu was close to getting his chance and that has proven to be the case either side of the international break.
