What happened when a popular steam train visited Wales today

Hundreds of people turned out to see a massive steam train as it travelled through south Wales.

The well-known 60163 Tornado train travelled along mainline between London and Wales on Tuesday, December 10 as part of a Christmas trip.

Although the train looks like something from the last century, it was actually completed in 2008 making it the first steam train to be be built in the UK since 1960.

Dozens of trainspotters waited patiently at Cardiff Central Station to see the train arrive full of Christmas shoppers.

After the train departed from London on Tuesday morning, the locomotive passed through  Newport  before arriving in  Cardiff  .

But the service was disrupted after a train broke down at Severn Tunnel Junction causing delays of up to an hour.

National Rail says: "The broken down train between Severn Tunnel Junction and Patchway is on the move.

"However, whilst service recovers, journeys between Newport and Patchway/Gloucester may still be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised."

The trip is part of a Christmas shopping day out with hundreds of passengers onboard.

Mulled wine and mince pies were being served to first and standard class passengers on board.

The train was named by Prince Charles at a ceremony in York in 2009.
