What happened to William Saliba at Arsenal training ahead of Manchester City trip

Arsenal wonderkid William Saliba suffered an almighty scare at a recent training session.

The teenager is still getting used to life in England after returning to the club in the summer following a season-long loan at former club Saint-Etienne.

He gave supporters a glimpse of his quality in a pre-season friendly win over MK Dons in August and was on the bench for the Community Shield penalty shootout win over Liverpool.

Although, he's yet to make a competitive appearance for the Gunners.

With that said, Saliba has seemed in positive spirits during recent training sessions and appears to be in good company with several Arsenal first-team players.

As spotted by some Gunners fans last month, Saliba walked out for a session alongside captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and compatriot Alexandre Lacazette.

All of which prompted a theory that he is being mentored by the strike duo.

However, Shkodran Mustafi has taken a different approach.

Thanks to @afcsammm on Twitter, Mustafi's antics at training ahead of this weekend's Premier League clash has gone viral.

The centre-back, who could be available against City after missing the start of the season through injury, waits for the first person to come through a set of doors at London Colney.

It just happens to be that Saliba is the unfortunate one ahead of David Luiz and the Frenchman looked genuinely scared as Mustafi popped up from seemingly out of nowhere.

Mustafi may have plenty more chances to scare Saliba in the coming weeks as the youngster is set to stay at Arsenal despite being linked with a loan move to an EFL club.

Speaking at his pre-Man City press conference on Thursday, manager Mikel Arteta said he expects the teenager to stay put.

This comes after the Spaniard admitted this season will be a transitional one for the centre-back.

"He had a lost year last year," Arteta said of Saliba earlier this month.

"For many reasons, that wasn’t the transition year that he needed because he had a lot of injuries, some personal issues and also with COVID-19.

"He needs that year of transition and we are trying to make the right decisions for him to give him the best transitional year to have the player we want in our future."
