What happened to toddler airlifted to Alder Hey after being scalded at festival

A toddler who was airlifted to Alder Hey after being scalded at a festival has undergone multiple skin grafts.

The two-year-old boy, Austin Stewart, was left with horrific injuries when a pot of boiling water fell on him at a railway festival near Llangollen on April 13.

Austin, from Bebington in Wirral , was then rushed to hospital with his family to receive treatment to the injuries on his right arm, both of his legs and torso.

Despite the serious injuries Austin suffered, his family have today announced that the little boy has been able to leave hospital.

His mum Anneka Hulse and father Alexander Stewart had been keeping a bedside vigil as their boy recovered from his traumatic injuries.

Miss Hulse told North Wales Live , Austin was getting back to his old self but would require further visits to Alder Hey.

She said: “He had skin grafts to his right arm and his right side and he will need to go back to hospital.

“He’s OK now but it has been difficult. It’s nice that people have been wishing him well.”

Austin, who loves all things mechanical was excited to see a military exhibition at the stop when the accident happened.

He caught the leg of a stove with his foot as he walked past and boiling water cascaded over him.

Only the quick-thinking actions of people at the scene along with his father, who doused him in cold water and managed to get his clothes off him, prevented him from being even more badly burned than he was.

He was airlifted by air ambulance to the children’s hospital and his mum said the little boy had been “tremendously brave”.

The family have not had direct contact with Llangollen Railway since he was injured, but the railway did send Austin a gift.

Miss Hulse added: “We haven’t heard anything about any investigation from Llangollen Railway or about any investigation by anyone else. They did send him a teddy.”

A spokeswoman for the railway said that an investigation by the company was "ongoing".
