What happened to the 5 players who were released by Bristol City last summer

The summer of 2019 was a time of big change for Bristol City, both in terms of outgoing and incoming players.

Adam Webster and Lloyd Kelly were both sold to Premier League clubs for big fees, while Tomas Kalas and Han-Noah Massengo were among those brought in for seven-figure sums.

There were also a few who left without as much of a fanfare, though, with five players leaving on free transfers at the end of last season.

Here’s what they have been up to since.

Frank Fielding

Fielding had spent six years at Ashton Gate, but was allowed to leave on a free after barely featuring in the Championship last season.

The England under-21 international stayed in the second tier, joining Millwall after the London club lost goalkeepers Jordan Archer, David Martin and Tom King over the summer.

However, a quad injury suffered on the opening weekend of the season kept him out until the new year, and Fielding’s recovery was hit by a bicep injury just as he was getting close to challenging Bartosz Bialkowski for a starting spot.

Stefan Marinovic

Marinovic was the second fringe goalkeeper to leave, having played just once last season in a 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town.

The New Zealand international returned to his homeland, joining Wellington Phoenix when his short-term stint with the Robins drew to a close, and has been a regular for the A-League side.

He has played all 20 Phoenix league games this season, conceding just 23 goals as Ufuk Talay’s team sit third in the table.

Eros Pisano

Pisano was only on the fringes of the first team last season, playing just seven times after the turn of the year, and ended his two-season spell in England at the end of the season.

After a few months without a club, he returned to Pisa, for whom he had played a handful of games more than a decade ago, in January.

The defender has played six times in Serie B this season as the Nerazzurri sit in mid-table, scoring his first goal for the club against Cremonese.

Aaron Parsons

Young defender Parsons didn’t move too far away from Bristol, joining non-League Weston Super-Mare AFC in the Southern Premier.

He agreed a contract extension with the club after helping them stay in the top half of the table before the season came to a premature end, and will remain on the Seagulls’ books next season.

“He was taught brilliantly at Bristol City and everything he does, he does to the best of his ability making him a valuable member of our squad,” Weston Super-Mare manager Scott Bartlett said in May.

Jake Andrews

Midfield man Andrews had spent last season on loan at Torquay United under former Bristol City boss Gary Johnson, and made a permanent switch to the Devon side over the summer following their promotion to the National League.

Torquay sat in 15th when the season was cut short, with Andrews having scored five goals in the league and once in the victory over Boreham Wood which took the Gulls into the first round proper of the FA Cup.

He is one of two Torquay players to have been named in the National League young team of the season, as well as defender Ben Wynter.
