What happened to Philippe Coutinho after talk of Chelsea and Barcelona transfer negotiations

Philippe Coutinho to Chelsea transfer rumours has gathered pace this week.

Talk of the former Liverpool attacking midfielder returning to the Premier League dates all the way back to last summer prior to joining Bayern Munich on a season-long loan deal.

However, with the Bundesliga giants unlikely to sign the Brazilian on a permanent basis there's every chance he will be on the move once the 2019/20 season finishes.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City and Manchester United have all been tipped to sign Coutinho in the summer.

But it would appear that Chelsea are the favourites if reports coming out of Spain are to be believed.

On Wednesday, Spanish publication Diario Sport claimed Barcelona and the Blues had already started negotiations over a deal.

In addition, the report stated the west London outfit are hoping to bring down the €90 million (£79m) price tag the Spanish side currently have on the Brazil international.

Just a couple of days after these rumours emerged, Coutinho did something which might be of interest to his prospective new club and their head coach Frank Lampard.

As revealed by Sport Bild, Coutinho is facing up to a couple of weeks on the sidelines after undergoing an operation on his ankle.

Due to the football season across Europe including the Bundesliga currently suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic, Coutinho won't miss any games.

With that said, he won't be able to train for the next fortnight.

Barcelona legend Rivaldo has had his say on Coutinho potentially joining Chelsea.

“Looking at Coutinho's last few years we can say that he didn't achieved what was expected of him, but he is still has time to recover his best football and with his confidence back he could easily become the same player he was at Liverpool,” he told Betfair.

“He is still a regular in the Brazilian national team and just hasn't been lucky enough at Barcelona or Bayern, but perhaps that could change with a new club and I believe this would be a nice opportunity for him to get back to his best football at Chelsea."
