Ander Herrera
A fan favourite, Herrera was never the flashiest player but could always be relied upon to put in a shift and do what was asked of him.
Deployed as a box to box midfielder or as a man-marker, Jose Mourinho used him as the latter in a match against Chelsea which saw him follow Eden Hazard all over the pitch for 90 minutes, Herrera never rarely settled on one role.
When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer arrived in 2018, Herrera's contract was expiring and after not being offered one by the club, decided to not renew and joined Paris-Saint Germain in 2019.
Luke Shaw
One of only three Van Gaal signings still at the club, Shaw has had a mixed time at United.
Starting off really well, the left back suffered an horrific injury at the start of his second season which sidelined him for 11 months.
Upon his return, Shaw failed to reach the heights which persuaded United to sign him from Southampton as a teenager and at one point under Van Gaal's successor in Jose Mourinho, it looked like his Old Trafford-career was over.
But under Solskjaer, the 26-year-old has progressed into one of the best left backs in world football and though he has hit a bit of bad form, it shouldn't be too long before Shaw is back to his best.
Memphis Depay
Memphis arrived at Old Trafford from PSV with a huge reputation.
The talented Dutchman would only go onto make 33 league appearances in his 18-month spell at Old Trafford, and failed to establish himself - scoring just two goals.
Mourinho sold him to Lyon in January 2017 but United inserted a buy-back clause in the deal.
This past summer, he joined Barcelona, who have had a fall from grace within the past two seasons. Depay has performed well in Catalonia, though, scoring seven goals in his first 13 games.
Marcos Rojo
Marcos Rojo looked to be a solid signing early in his United career, making a number of impressive performances.
He would fail to build on this though, and became a bit part player before being practically frozen out of the side - making less than 80 league appearances in seven years.
United finally offloaded him earlier this year, with Boca Juniors signing the 31-year-old.
Angel di Maria
A half season, or perhaps few games, wonder, Di Maria arrived from Real Madrid amid much hype and anticipation.
It started off so well, three goals in his first five games as he adapted to life in the Premier League quite easily.
But the goals dried up and he failed to find the back of the net again after scoring against Yeovil in the FA Cup third round in January.
There was the odd moment of brilliance, like the assist for Juan Mata against Liverpool, but 12 months after arriving in Manchester, Di Maria was shipped off to France to play for PSG where he remains to this day.
Daley Blind
A versatile player who was used at left-back, centre-back and centre-midfield, Blind was extremely useful throughout Van Gaal's tenure.
Never the flashiest player, but Blind was a dependable player in his time at United.
After four years in Manchester, Blind returned to the Netherlands and joined Ajax and is still there - impressing since moving to a centre-back full time.
Victor Valdes
Signed to replace David de Gea who was allegedly Real Madrid bound, De Gea staying condemned the former Barcelona goalkeeper to the bench for the majority of his United career.
Clashes with Van Gaal, stemming from their days at Barca, Valdes would remain a back-up before moving on to Middlesbrough for a season before retiring.
Radamel Falcao
Danny Welbeck was sacrificed to make room for El Tigre on deadline day in 2014 but the Colombian's United career was a huge disappointment as he scored just four goals in 29 appearances.
He was even worse the following season at Chelsea, scoring once.
Falcao rediscovered his form at Monaco after joining the Ligue 1 club in 2016, scoring 83 goals in 140 games across three seasons there before signing for Galatasaray, where he has averaged just under a goal every two games.
This past summer, he moved to Rayo Vallecano, where he has made a quick start scoring five goals in seven games.
Matteo Darmian
Began his United career superbly at the start of the 2015-16 season but quickly faded.
Darmian became a squad player for his final three years at the club and moved to Parma for a nominal fee on deadline day last summer.
He joined Inter Milan last year and won the Serie A.
Bastian Schweinsteiger
Yeah, United signed this guy about six years too late.
Schweinsteiger proved to be just a big name, arriving on a free transfer from Bayern. If we're being honest, he was released from the German club for a reasons.
He lasted less than two seasons before being shipped off to Chicago Fire in March 2017.
Did prove his professionalism to get a few games after Mourinho had frozen him out upon his arrival in 2016, though.
He retired at the end of 2019.
Morgan Schneiderlin
Similarly to Depay, Schneiderlin joined United in the summer of 2015 and left in the winter of 2017.
United fans didn't exactly expect too much, with some scratching their heads as they paid £25 million to acquire him from Southampton.
He was a massive disappointment and United did well to get £22million for him when Everton came knocking. He left Everton to join Nice last summer.
Sergio Romero
Having only departed Old Trafford at the end of last season, Romero was arguably the best back-up goalkeeper in the Premier League during his time at United.
Backing up David de Gea meant the majority of the games played for the club were in cup competitions.
Anthony Martial
Talk about making an excellent first impression on your debut. Martial came off the bench against Liverpool, turned defender Martin Skrtel inside out before finishing expertly past Simon Mignolet in front of the Stretford End.
The Frenchman continued to impress but the arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic two years later complicated where he stood in the team after the club gave his number nine shirt to the Swede, leaving him with 11.
This coincided with a downturn in form which coincidently returned when Ibrahimovic left.
Martial had his best season in 2019/20, scoring 17 league goals and registering seven assists. But a year later that number fell to four and his season was cut short by injury.
