What happened to Lisa Armstrong in The Bay? Morven Christie missing in action as ITV drama returns
The Bay is back for a new series on ITV but there's a notable absentee - lead character DS Lisa Armstrong, played by acclaimed actress Morven Christie.
Morven had been the central character of the popular crime drama for its first two series, with Lisa sent packing from her job in series 1 after her confession that she had a romantic liaison with the step father of two local children on the night they went missing.
DS Armstrong was called back into the line of duty in The Bay series 2 as she and her colleagues attempted to track down the culprit for the doorstep murder of businessman Stephen Marshbrook, while Lisa also had to contend with the fact that her ex was back in town.
There are still a number of unanswered questions as far as Lisa is concerned, but it doesn't like we'll find out the answers to them anytime soon as Morven will play no part in series 3, with Marsha Thomason joining the show to take on the new leading role of DS Jenna Townsend.
As viewers were left asking 'where is she?' there was just a one line reference to Lisa during last Wednesday's first episode of series 3, when her ex colleague DS Karen Hobson told newcomer Jenna that Lisa's "kids had grown up," and she'd "moved on."
Morven confirmed she'd left The Bay on Instagram back in spring 2021, when she posted a photo of her famous character on Instagram and wrote: "Bye Lisa. You were a gift. Thank you Daragh Carville, thank you beloved @leehavenjones for bringing me in, and biggest love EVER to the crew the crew the crew who had my back and have my heart."
Prior to that she appeared to take aim at The Bay's producers for killing off Lisa's colleague Med, played by Taheen Modak.
Uploading a picture of Taheen to her Insta grid, she posted: "Day one til the end. So honoured to have spent my 2 seasons on The Bay with this guy, from fresh out of college to smashing it like an old pro.
"My partner, my pal, this big souled lil king. They should never have let you go, but that’s for another day. Now you get to go build your kingdom -and I’m right behind you pal. We did it."
Speaking about the change of leading lady as filming on The Bay series 3 kicked off last year, Catherine Oldfield, Creative Director of Tall Story Pictures and Executive Producer of The Bay said, “Daragh and I always felt that there were so many brilliant stories to be told in the world of The Bay so, after Morven decided to leave the show, we got straight to work finding a new lead actor.
"From the moment Marsha read for the part we knew it was ‘game over’ and we’d found our new lead, DS Townsend. We are so excited to see Marsha bring these stories to life.”
