The mystery of the disappearance of Claudia Lawrence has baffled investigators since March 2009.
Claudia, who was 35 years old at the time, was reported missing when she failed to turn up at work at the University of York.
The disappearance sparked a £1million manhunt, with police trawling through phone records and more than 2,500 statements.
The search for the missing chef is still ongoing, and more recently police have begun searching two isolated fishing lakes.
Police confirmed on Tuesday, August 24, that an operation had begun to search the gravel pits at Sand Hutton, east of York.
As the search continues, we take a look at the timeline for the disappearance.
What happened to Claudia Lawrence?
Claudia was last seen on March 18, 2009, near her home in Melrosegate, Heworth, York.
The 35-year-old had spoken to her mum on the phone, but was never heard from again.

2009
March 18
Claudia spoke with her parents over the phone and sent her friend a test at 8.23pm. She has not been seen or heard from since.
March 20
Claudia's father Peter contacted North Yorkshire Police after his daughter failed to turn up to meet a friend at a pub, and didn't go to work.
April 24
Detectives in the case say that Claudia's disappearance is being treated as a murder investigation. A £10,000 reward is offered for information that could lead to the conviction of those responsible.
2010
May 6
Claudia's father called for an urgent independent inquiry into the police investigation of his daughter’s disappearance and suspected murder.
July 29
Police confirmed they would be reducing the number of officers dedicated to the inquiry into the missing woman’s disappearance.
2013
October 29
Police launched a fresh review into the case, and carried out a new forensic search on Claudia's home.

2014
March 19
Five years after Claudia went missing, police discovered fingerprints of people who had not yet come forward in the investigation.
May 13
A 59-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder, but was released on police bail and eventually released without charge on November 17 2014.
2015
March 23
A man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of murdering Claudia, but was released on police bail the following day.
April 22
Three more men from the York area, all in their 50s, were arrested on suspicion of murder and released on bail.
September 17
A file of evidence on four men arrested on suspicion of murder was sent by North Yorkshire Police to the Crown Prosecution service (CPS) so it could consider whether to bring charges.
2016
March 8
Police confirmed the CPS had decided that the four men would not face charges.
2017
January 17
The investigation into the disappearance of Claudia was scaled down yet again. Her father said he was “hugely depressed and disappointed”.


2019
March
Claudia is still missing nearly a decade later, and her father said in an interview with the PA news agency that "it's very difficult” to conceive of her still being alive".
July
The Guardianship (Missing Persons) Bill, also known as Claudia’s Law, came into force. This followed years of campaigning by Mr Lawrence and allows relatives to take control of their missing loved ones’ financial matters.
2021
February 15
The death of Peter Lawrence, Claudia's father, was announced.

March 18
Speaking after taking over the police investigation, Detective Superintendent Wayne Fox said it was not too late for people to come forward and stop the “unrelenting anguish” caused to the chef’s loved ones.
August 24
A new search operation was announced at the gravel pits at Sand Hutton, about eight miles from York.
