Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen suffered a double blow on Thursday night as Denmark were eliminated from Euro 2020.
Despite taking the lead at Wembley Stadium through Mikkel Damsgaard’s spectacular free-kick, the Danes eventually departed as the losers as a Simon Kjaer own goal and a Harry Kane strike turned the game in England’s favour.
It was a tough end to the tournament for Chelsea man Christensen after an emotional run to the semi-finals.
However, his evening was made even worse having been injured in the second-half of the game and eventually withdrawn.
Stretching to clear a ball with just over ten minutes on the clock, the defender then immediately fell to the floor clutching his thigh.
He was then immediately withdrawn by Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand and replaced by former Fulham defender Joachim Andersen.
The blow is another frustrating chapter for Christensen despite having enjoyed a standout Euro 2020.
He had previously started every game of the tournament, even playing every minute up until the final nine minutes up until Denmark’s 2-1 win against the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals.
Christensen has suffered with persistent injury issues since breaking into the Chelsea first-team and has never played more than 27 games in a Premier League season.
Meanwhile, the Dane had only managed to play 27 matches in all competitions for the Blues throughout the 2020/21 season as Chelsea lifted the Champions League title under Thomas Tuchel.
Whilst there was despair for Christensen and Denmark on the night, there was instead delight for Chelsea’s Three Lions contingent as England booked their place in the Euro 2020 final.
