TV fans’ newest obsession has dropped, with basically everyone poring over Netflix’s sinister new horror series Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen.
All eight episodes of the show — executive produced by Stranger Things’ Duffer Brothers — landed last week, treating viewers to the spine-tingling tale of Rachel (Camila Morrone) and Nicky (Adam DiMarco) in the week-long lead up to their wedding.
In streaming terms, Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen debuted a lifetime ago, so if you’ve already watched the finale and are dissecting what the hell just happened, you’ve come to the right place.
Below, we’re unpacking *that* ending and revealing what might be in store for the characters in the future. Dig in below, but proceed with caution: this article contains major spoilers for Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen.
What is the curse in Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen?
You can’t get your head around the ending without first understanding the centuries-old curse inflicted on Rachel, which is drip-fed to us throughout the season and gives the whole show its eerie vibe.
In episode four, we learn through a man named the Witness that Rachel has inherited a family curse that requires brides to only marry their one true soulmate or risk certain death. Basically, a curse-stricken Rachel must be sure Nicky is her true soulmate and marry him before sundown or else she’ll die.
A pretty intense bout of pre-wedding jitters, wouldn’t you say?

What happens in the Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen finale?
By the time the finale rolls around, Rachel and Nicky are all set to tie the knot. The soon-to-be newlyweds reach the altar in episode eight, but a spanner is thrown in the works when Nicky, shaken by his mother’s (Jennifer Jason Leigh) affair, hesitates during the nuptials. Now is not the time, Nicky!
Rachel warns that cancelling the wedding will unleash the curse on her and Nicky’s family members, and making matters worse, Rachel has at this point abandoned the idea that Nicky is her true soulmate, since he doesn’t even believe the curse is a real thing. All of this is a sure-fire way to trigger the curse, which is exactly what happens in the finale.
Nicky’s mother, who doubted his relationship with Rachel, is the first victim of the curse, followed by his sister (Gus Birney). In an effort to stop the deaths, Nicky, a newfound curse-believer, hastily marries Rachel to break the curse, but by then it’s too late.

What happens to Rachel and Nicky in the Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen finale?
Nicky manages to survive the wedding day deaths, perhaps because he truly believes Rachel is his soulmate, but Rachel isn’t so lucky. She succumbs to the curse after stumbling off the altar and bleeding to death. But in the finale’s big shock twist, this isn’t the end of Rachel’s story.
We quickly learn Rachel has resurrected as the Witness, meaning she’s doomed to oversee the curse and how it plays out across the weddings in Nicky’s family lineage. While fleeing the scene, Rachel warns Nicky’s nephew to be careful about who he marries, and she sees a note left by the Witness that says: “Your turn”.
Rachel zooms off in her “Just Married” vehicle with a smile on her face, with the final scene raising many questions about what might await her.

Will there be a second season of Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen?
At the time of writing, there has been no confirmation of a second season of Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen. Showrunner Haley Z. Boston said the show was conceived as a limited series, meaning season one completes “the full story”, but she didn’t rule out the possibility of making it an anthology.
“I think there’s a world where it’s a totally different, very bad thing. I’d have to find another existential fear to explore,” Boston said. That tease means we might see an all-new season with a different curse, but again, that hasn’t been officially confirmed.

In the meantime, we can at least rewatch the show to pick up any Easters Eggs undoubtedly left along the way. Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen is currently streaming on Netflix.
