What happened in Rafa Benitez's Press conference 24 hours after contract plea to Newcastle United chiefs

Rafa Benitez did little to lift spirits after the game when it came to talk of his contract extension with Newcastle United.

The Toon manager cut a glum figure following the 1-0 defeat against Crystal Palace and after stating he was waiting for "an answer" on Friday, he was a little more subdued 24 hours later.

Owner Mike Ashley was not at St James' Park for the narrow defeat but managing director Lee Charnley was in the stands as usual.

When asked after the game, Benitez said to Sky Sports: "There’s been negotiations.

"We are not that close."

Benitez then made his way to the main Press conference and was asked once more if there had been any progress on discussions with Ashley or Charnley.
He replied: "No, the same situation as yesterday."

Benitez was then asked by Chronicle Live if it was frustrating that the club are in this situation.

He replied: "No, my frustration today is that we lost a game that we deserved to win and it was a massive game.

"We did everything to win the game for 80 minutes, and we didn't do it and it's something that we have to learn, as I have said so many times, in the final third, the final decisions and manage the game, keep the balance.

"We talk sometimes about attack, attack – we were attacking, but at the same time, we have to be aware that they are very dangerous on the counter-attack.

"We did that for 80 minutes and after [the goal], we were not capable of managing the last 15 minutes at the end.

"You cannot give a team that is so dangerous two or three chances to play on the counter-attack in the last minutes. Even if you have to score, you have to keep the team well-organised and then regain the ball, like we did for 80 minutes.

"It was so disappointing because we were talking about that during the whole week and in the team-talk and it was very clear.

"It was clear for a while and then after when we made a mistake, we continued making mistakes in the last minutes."

Benitez was then asked about the uncertainty in the air at St James' Park and whether that is helping anybody at the moment.

He said: "No.

"Today was more a game of football that we knew was an important game and we were doing a lot of good things.

"But my disappointment is because what happened today, we knew that could happen and we were talking about that, how to prevent these things, and we didn't do it at the end."

So are United still in a relegation fight?

Benitez said: "We have to keep thinking in the same way.

"The next game is another final, we have to try to get three points and that's it.

"The problem is I have said that so many times and so many months ago.

"Until the end, you have to keep going."
