What happened between William Saliba and PSG star Kylian Mbappe amid latest Arsenal reminder

Arsenal defender William Saliba certainly has supporters talking during his loan spell with Marseille.

The young Frenchman joined the Ligue 1 outfit at the start of the campaign and is set to spend the season at the Stade Velodrome.

He has so far made 12 appearances for the club, having played every game of the season besides the 0-0 draw against Angers back in September.

Whilst he has enjoyed a consistent period with the French giants, his assignment got even harder this weekend as Marseille did battle with Ligue 1 powerhouses Paris-Saint Germain in Le Classique.

Facing up against the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Angel di Maria, it is unlikely that Saliba would have faced a harder game in his entire career.

Luckily, he performed extremely well, with the game finishing 0-0 - albeit both sides having had a goal ruled out by VAR.

His performance certainly earned plenty of praise from Arsenal fans, with many suggesting that he should be handed more opportunities at the Emirates Stadium under Mikel Arteta once he returns.

Whilst Saliba’s overall showing on the day was highly respectable, one moment in particular caught the eye.

With the game heading into the 84th minute, two of PSG’s stars combined as Messi released Mbappe in behind the Marseille backline.

The World Cup winner raced away and looked sure to beat former Spurs stopper Pau Lopez, only for Saliba to produce a wonderful recovering tackle to nudge the ball away from the speedy French forward.

Mbappe was left sprawling on the floor, baffled at quite how the on-loan Arsenal man had produced such a challenge when he looked odds-on to give PSG a late lead.

Meanwhile, Saliba was himself celebrating as his side held on to secure a point that leaves them fourth in the current Ligue 1 standings and ten points behind their great rivals.
