What happened at Manchester Airport as passengers and staff evacuated

Police evacuated passengers and staff from Manchester Airport after reports of a suspicious package being found.

The incident happened at around 3.20pm on Tuesday, October 19.

Police blocked off all approaches to Terminal 2 as people were evacuated.

Terminals 1 and 3 - which are at the other side of the airport complex - continued to operate as normal.

The M.E.N reported how it understands the evacuation was prompted by a 'trigger' as someone went through security.

A security scanner is believed to have picked up a suspicious package.

Police were called to investigate the baggage item and the alarm was raised.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Police were called with a report of a suspicious package in Terminal 2 of Manchester Airport at around 3.20pm (19 October 2021).

"The terminal has been evacuated as per standard procedure and a cordon has been put in place as a safety precaution while an assessment is carried out."

Earlier a spokesperson for Manchester Airport said: "Following a report of a suspicious package in Terminal Two, a controlled evacuation is taking place as per standard procedure.

"We are in close contact with Greater Manchester Police, who are managing the response, and will provide an update on the situation as soon as possible."

The spokesperson confirmed later that flights due to operate in and out of Terminal 2 were likely be diverted to Terminal 1 as a result of the incident.
