What Gini Wijnaldum said to Andy Robertson ahead of Liverpool exit

There was a Liverpool reunion on Wednesday night as Andy Robertson and Gini Wijnaldum represented their countries.

Robertson captained Scotland while Wijnaldum wore the armband for the Netherlands in their friendly match ahead of this summer’s European Championships.

The match finished in a 2-2 draw, with Robertson providing an assist for his country's second goal scored by Kevin Nisbet.

Before the game, Robertson and Wijnaldum, as captain of their respective countries, met in the centre circle as the referee did the routine coin toss.

As the pair met, the pair gave each other a smile and Wijnaldum can be heard speaking to Robertson.

“I want to hug you,” Wijnaldum can be heard saying.

Now that Wijnaldum and Robertson are in separate camps, the pair are observing social distancing rules by not hugging as they would have done at Liverpool.

Wijnaldum is on the verge of leaving Liverpool with his contract due to expire at the end of this month.

For Liverpool’s final game of the season against Crystal Palace, Wijnaldum was given a standing ovation by the Anfield crowd as well as a guard of honour by his teammates and Jurgen Klopp.
