Georginio Wijnaldum has told his Liverpool teammates not to focus on the Premier League title, despite taking an early eight point lead in the table over Manchester City.
Liverpool have been faultless so far this season, taking maximum points from their first eight games. City, on the other hand, have fallen to defeats against Norwich and Wolves, while also drawing at home to Tottenham.
A win for Liverpool in their next fixture at Manchester United will see them equal City's Premier League record of 18 consecutive wins, as Jurgen Klopp's men have continued their winning run from the end of last season that took City all the way to the final day before they could secure the title.
However, despite Liverpool's incredible form - they haven't lost in the league since City won at the Etihad in January - Pep Guardiola's side have history in recovering a title from well behind as they found themselves in a similar position at the halfway point last season before going on to win the league by a point.
So Liverpool are all too aware of the need to continue winning, knowing any slip up hands City a way back into the title race. Understandably, then, Wijnaldum has warned his team to focus on themselves, rather than start to even consider themselves as potential Premier League winners.
He told Sky Sports: “We just have to make sure that we collect as much points as possible and try to put a good performance in week in, week out. We will see at the end of the season where we will stand.
“We don’t want to think that we are already champions, that’s the really wrong thing to do.
“So I’m sure the manager will keep us with both feet on the ground and say we have to think about ourselves, trying to play good, give 100 per cent every week and at the end of the season we’ll see where we stand.”
