Napoli star Lorenzo Insigne has revealed that Gennaro Gattuso told him managerial negotiations with Tottenham were 'a bit of a mess' as they continue to search for a new head coach.
Tottenham have been without a permanent manager for over two months, with Jose Mourinho dismissed from his post in April after enduring a difficult season in north London.
The Portuguese coach oversaw an embarrassing Europa League round of 16 defeat to Croatian outfit Dinamo Zagreb, despite Spurs having a 2-0 lead going into the second leg at the Stadion Maksimir.
Furthermore, the former Chelsea boss had his side languishing in seventh, their lowest finish since Harry Redknapp was the manager back in 2009.
Since Mourinho's sacking, Spurs have been linked with a number of managers - including former Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte and AS Roma's previous coach Paulo Fonseca.
After moves for both Conte and Fonseca fell through there was the surprise news that former Fiorentina manager Gennaro Gattuso could take charge in north London, but talks between the two parties appeared short-lived and eventually amounted to nothing, with an angry backlash from fans at the time.
Italian international Lorenzo Insigne, who played for Gattuso during his days as Napoli coach, admitted that Gattuso told him talks with Spurs were 'a bit of a mess'.
"We’ve texted each other, he told me there was a bit of a mess, but now I am focused on the Euros, while he’s on holiday so I am not going to ask him such questions," Insigne told Football Italia.
Insigne has also been linked with a move to Tottenham in recent weeks and given he has just 12 months left on his current deal in Naples, Spurs could have a chance of getting him on the cheap this summer.
However, Italian football expert Ciro Venerato claims that Tottenham's new director of football Fabio Paratici has told him that Insigne will not be coming to England.
"He told me that Insigne will not land in the Premier League," Venerato told Kiss Kiss Napoli, relayed by Area Napoli.
Insigne has established himself as one of Europe's most dangerous wingers in recent years, bagging 46 goals and 26 assists across the last three seasons.
