What Gedson Fernandes and Paulo Gazzaniga exits would mean for Tottenham's foreign player issue

It could be a very interesting end to the transfer window at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

With Troy Parrott heading out of the door and subsequently linking up with League One side Ipswich Town, a few more players are in line to follow before the 11pm transfer deadline.

Gedson Fernandes is one of those as a temporary switch to Galatasaray could come to fruition following his struggles in north London since joining on loan this time last year.

Amid plenty of speculation regarding a return to Benfica this month after only making 14 appearances for Spurs, the Turkish club released a statement on their official website on Sunday afternoon confirming that talks with Benfica over a loan deal had taken place.

Tottenham Hotspur Transfer Deadline Day agenda

football.london also understands that Paulo Gazzaniga could be set for a January exit as Spanish side Elche are keen to sign him on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

Linked with a summer move from Spurs after falling down the pecking order following Joe Hart's move to the club, Gazzaniga has yet to play a single minute of action this season and he has only been included in the matchday squad twice in the FA Cup.

Exits for both would see two of Tottenham's non-homegrown players depart, but what exactly would it mean in terms of Mourinho's squad in the Premier League and Europa League?

Well, Tottenham have had a major problem with their high number of foreign players at the club over the past few years.

Mauricio Pochettino on occasions was forced to leave the likes of Erik Lamela, Vincent Janssen and Juan Foyth out of his Champions League squad, with Mourinho having this problem when naming his Europa League squad this term.

Rules state that clubs can have no more than 17 non-homegrown players in their Premier League and European squads, with Mourinho three over the limit in Europe already with Gedson, Gazzaniga and Joe Rodon not included.

However, the rules slightly differ in terms of the Premier League as Matt Doherty, Ben Davies and Rodon are classed as homegrown due to their academy years in Ireland and Wales respectively as opposed to the European regulations where they are seen as non-homegrown players.

In terms of Spurs' Premier League squad, the Lilywhites currently have one free foreign player spot in their 25-man squad but this would increase to two if Gazzaniga clinches a move to Elche.

An exit for Gedson wouldn't change things for Spurs in the Premier League as he is down on the club's U21 player list as he was 21 at the start of the season.

January moves for both also wouldn't have an impact on the team's Europa League numbers as both weren't registered to take part in the competition.

Rather than having 20 foreign players at the club, Spurs would just be one over the 17 player limit with Rodon the one unfortunately missing out.

The Welshman can be added to the European squad for the knockout phase of the competition but this would mean Mourinho cutting a non-homegrown player in the process.

Clearly an issue he and Daniel Levy need to address in the summer to make life easier in terms of incomings, the potential departures of both Gazzaniga and Gedson would make a slight difference in the Premier League but not in the Europa League regarding the non-homegrown player problems.
