What Gary Neville and Martin Tyler said about Man City penalty shout vs Liverpool

Manchester City had the better of Liverpool in the first-half at Anfield, with the Reds fortunate it was still 0-0 at the break.

On 32 minutes, Phil Foden had the better of James Milner and charged into the box, but was halted in the tracks.

The 21-year-old felt Milner clipped his heel and was left frustrated a penalty wasn't given.

Referee Paul Tierney was having none of it and, after a VAR check, the decision stood - much to the bemusement of Pep Guardiola.

Former Manchester United star Gary Neville and Martin Tyler discussed the decision on commentary, with Neville describing the Liverpool midfielder as 'clumsy'.

He said on Sky Sports: "It was clumsy, it started on the outside, did it carry on into the box? It definitely is a foul, there’s a clip of the heel.

"Well he thinks it’s a penalty [Pep Guardiola]. That’s that acceleration Phil Foden has, cuts across you, he thinks he’s there Milner."

Martin Tyler added: "It’s not really a dive it’s his momentum that takes him down but no penalty.

"I think it was the lunge that took it into the penalty area, so interesting to compare incidents inside or on the outside anywhere else in the pitch."

Replays showed the challenge took place outside the box, but Milner faces a difficult second-half on a yellow card.

10 minutes after the penalty shout, the 35-year-old was booked for another challenge on Foden.
