What Freddie Ljungberg did when Nicolas Pepe was substituted after first Premier League goal

It was a night to remember for Arsenal's club record signing Nicolas Pepe in the 3-1 win over West Ham United.

Restored to the starting line-up for a Premier League game for the first time since the 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace towards the end of October, the Ivory Coast international seized his opportunity with both hands.

With the Gunners trailing 1-0 thanks to Angelo Ogbonna's first-half goal, wonderkid Gabriel Martinelli got them back on level terms with a nice finish from close range.

But having not won in nine games across all competitions, a draw wasn't enough and the visitors needed extra inspiration from somewhere.

Up stepped Pepe with his first Premier League goal as well as his first strike from open play since arriving at the Emirates Stadium for £72m from Lille in the summer transfer window.

Moments later he teed up club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to make it 3-1.

All of which earned him huge praise from supporters on social media as well as a kind word from interim Arsenal head coach Freddie Ljungberg.

As spotted by the Sky Sports cameras, when Pepe walked off the pitch to be replaced by Reiss Nelson he was stopped by Ljungberg.

It's unclear as to what was said between the pair but both were all smiles after the exchange.

Speaking after the game, Ljungberg was understandably full of praise for Pepe.

"People always ask me about Nico and I try to explain he comes from the French league to the Premier League, the best league in the world," the Swede told reporters.

"It's a lot faster, a lot harder and he needs to adapt.

"People can put pressure on him and that's not easy.

Today he worked hard defensively and offensively. He showed his quality and I'm so pleased for him. He's a big, big buy for the club and that's put pressure on him as well.

"I think he will fall asleep with a smile."
