What Frank Lampard said to Callum Hudson-Odoi at half time in Chelsea's Carabao Cup win

Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard has revealed the message he gave to returning Blues' winger Callum Hudson-Odoi in the 7-1 Carabao Cup third round victory against Grimsby Town.

The 18-year-old was named in the starting lineup to make his first appearance of the season upon his return from a ruptured Achilles tendon picked up towards the end of the 2018/19 campaign.

Hudson-Odoi has been undergoing rehabilitation throughout the summer and, after appearing in a couple of U23 games, was deemed fit enough to start against the Mariners as the Blues eased through to the fourth round of the League Cup.

The winger grabbed a goal in the 89th minute to mark his return to first team action, but in his post match press conference, Lampard has highlighted an area of his game where the youngster has to improve, especially from the first half of the encounter,

"Firstly he has signed up, so that is good so that puts to bed everything else," said the Chelsea boss.

"In terms of his performance, I thought first half not so sure. I thought him and Christian as wingers, the message was to hurt the line and run behind and get into the box to take people on. It wasn’t happening and that message didn’t get across.

Chelsea 1-2 Liverpool: Frank Lampard press conference

"It was reinforced pretty strongly and in the second half he managed to get into better positions. Callum’s talent means that he absolutely work hard to run behind people, to get at people, to be inside, be outside and work off the ball, all those things.

"Where he needs to learn because if he wants to play week in and week out that is what he is going to have to do."
