What Frank Lampard said about Son Heung-min's red card for Andre Gomes challenge and VAR

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has stated that he felt "very sorry" for Son Heung-min on Sunday following his red card against Everton.

The Spurs ace was dismissed in the 79th minute after his tackle unfortunately led to Andre Gomes' horrific ankle injury.

The Everton team raced over to tend to the Portuguese international as he lay in agony on the ground, with Son seen in tears on the sidelines after seeing the full extent of the midfielder's injury.

Referee Martin Atkinson had initially taken out a yellow card to book the player, before then changing his mind and showing Son red.

Mauricio Pochettino was not impressed at all that VAR wasn't used to decide whether or not that it was a challenge worthy of a straight red given that it had been in regular use during the match for a couple of penalty incidents.

With VAR a major talking point in the top flight since it's introduction at the start of the season, Lampard was asked about the incident and what should happen with VAR when speaking at his pre-match press conference.

"I would work with it at the moment and see where we can improve," he said. "It needs to be a really open conversation, referees, managers fans, whatever.

"I know there are so many opinions, it’s not easy. The clinical decisions are an improvement.

"I know Firmino was very, very borderline, which people could maybe disagree with, but I think the clinical nature of offside and goalline technology is positive.

"It’s the subjective in between ones that we really need to decide where we are coming from with this idea of clear and obvious because at the weekend there were a lot of non clear and obvious and some were overturned and others weren't

"That’s not ideal and I felt very sorry for Son yesterday because of the nature of his injury and his reaction and the fact he took a red card when, looking back at his tackle, no way did the force of his tackle affect the injury.

"That’s something that is horrendous and can happen occasionally, so I felt sorry for both players."
