What Forest fans said about new bar that's replaced the Southbank on Trent Bridge

Forest fans have had their say on a new bar on Trent Bridge that's replaced the Southbank - a popular supporters' venue for more than 20 years.

The Waterside Bar and Kitchen opened to the public on Saturday, February 22, after a £500,000 transformation.

It is much different to the Southbank in that there are now three televisions showing major sporting events, rather than 22 as before.

And the new contemporary venue features lots of wood and trendy booths.

Football supporters are still welcome - and Reds fans told Nottinghamshire Live what they thought about the new bar, ahead of the QPR game at the City Ground on Saturday afternoon.

“Southbank was about gathering together for a pint after a match," said 56-year-old school operator Richard Whitbread.

"It feels like it is more about marketing now, it is not about football anymore.”

Engineer Phil Gospel, 59, said: “It is my first time coming here. I miss Southbank, I’ve got so many nice memories.

"I miss the concept of it, the atmosphere and the nice times I had there.”

Transport manager Jeff Pallett, 58, said: “I am not planning to go there. I cannot believe they’ve done it."

However, others said the change came at a good time.

Retired Chris Lane, 68, of Doncaster, said: “This is better. We are more in the 21st century now. Southbank is gone, we are over it. People need to adapt to change and to accept it.

"This one suits the area more, it’s got more to it. They’ve got guest speakers coming as well - it is very fancy.”

Director of a sports club, Lisa Cunningham, 41, said: “I like it. I think it is fancy and nice. And the food is delicious.”

John Gretton, 64, said: "It is is a nice change, it has a terrace and everything. It looks fancy and welcoming to football fans.”

Claire McVeagh, 43, said: “I’ve been working at Forest for 25 years selling programmes outside the pub and I also work at county hall.

"It will be nice to sit outside in the summer and have a glass of wine."

Speaking about trade on Saturday, the bar's general manager, Joe Scothern, 29, said: “It has been a mixed bag really.

"People have different opinions about it, but most people who come here really enjoy it.

"Football fans are still welcome here, definitely.

"We’ve got guest speakers, retired footballers coming for Q&A sessions with football fans.

"But we are more strict with numbers now, as some people come here to eat.

"It is a different atmosphere and the prices speak for themselves. It is not as expensive as people would think. It is even cheaper than before.”
