What football’s suspension means for Chelsea’s ‘Loan Army’ and their futures

Chelsea are well-known for their ‘Loan Army’.

Part of the progression at the west London club is heading out to another club and developing as a player.

This season, once again the Blues have had several players on loan around the UK and also the rest of the world.

Some are certainly performing better than others.

Throwback to when Carlo Ancelotti named his team a day early

Conor Gallagher has shone at both Charlton Athletic and Swansea City, while on the flip side Danny Drinkwater has failed with Burnley and Aston Villa.

The pathway to the Chelsea first team is often through the loan system, which has been shown by the current squad.

Andreas Christensen, Reece James, Fikayo Tomori, Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham all impressed on loan to make it into Frank Lampard’s side.

However, what does the current hiatus on professional football on Europe mean for those out on loan and their situations?

Uefa announced that Euro 2020 would be postponed for 12 months in order to give domestic football the chance to complete their seasons, if possible.

In England, professional football has been halted until at least April 30, however with the announcement that the UK is on lockdown, it is likely to be extended.

It means that the loan players are going to have to wait and see what their future holds.

Uefa are yet to decide what might happen with player contracts, with the current situation dictating that loan spells will finish on June 30.

However, any contract announcement is set to include what might happen with the loan players as well.

Another massive factor will be the transfer window situation and whether or not there will be one this summer.

Lampard has already had to deal with one transfer ban, and faces a potential prospect and dipping into the ‘Loan Army’ once again.

However, again it could be dictated by what Uefa decide over contract situations and how the loan system will be affected.
