What fans thought when Manchester United signed Matteo Darmian in 2015

Manchester United signed Matteo Darmian from Torino back in 2015 and the Italian arrived at Old Trafford with a reputation as one of Italy's brightest talents.

The defender made 146 appearances for the Serie A side and was identified by Louis van Gaal as the perfect player to fill in on the right side of defence.

His versatility meant that he was also comfortable at left-back, making him an extremely useful option to have at the manager's disposal.

Van Gaal said after signing Darmian : "He is a strong defender and has the ability to go forward in the attacking positions which is a fantastic attribute to have and much needed in the fast rhythm of the Premier League."

However, his time at United hasn't gone to plan, being restricted mostly to substitute appearances after Van Gaal was sacked. He was widely expected to leave last summer but ultimately stayed put.

His future at Old Trafford remains unclear with the defender not in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 's plans and reports have linked him with a move back to Italy before the summer transfer window closes.

United scouts could be forgiven for thinking that Darmian would turn out to be a great signing for the club with many football fans on Reddit agreeing that the Reds had pulled off a transfer coup.
