What Extinction Rebellion have planned in Bristol today

Extinction Rebellion have planted a "wishing tree" in College Green urging Bristol City Council for clean air in Bristoll.

XR will write their visions on fake money notes and hang them on a “wishing tree” outside City Hall to express their support for economic recovery which isn’t at the expense of the environment.

The messages will be presented to Mayor Marvin Rees at the end of this week of action by Extinction Rebellion, who are calling for “clean air for life, not just for lockdown”.

Extinction Rebellion say a city-wide clean air zone, affordable public transport, and safe cycling and walking routes would all support economic recovery and enable a fairer, more sustainable future for Bristol.

Phil Haughton is founder-owner of Bristol’s three Better Food Company grocery stores, with a collective £6million pound turnover. He believes there’s a bright future for Bristol business if the city embraces the big-picture thinking of “doughnut economics”.

This is a model developed by Oxford University economist Kate Raworth, which Amsterdam is using as a way to steer a way out of coronavirus lockdown.

The inner ring of Raworth’s economic “doughnut” sets out the minimum that people need to lead a good life, as defined by the UN’s sustainable development goals.

The outer ring of the doughnut is the ecological limits drawn up by earth-system scientists to avoid damaging climate, soils, oceans, the ozone layer, freshwater and biodiversity. Between the two rings is where the needs of people and planet are met.

“This is a really practical model for planning the economic future of Bristol,” says Phil Haughton. “This is not pie-in-the-sky thinking: it’s ready to go now. ”
