What Every Woman Wants tycoon Gerald Weisfeld dies aged 79

Legendary Scottish businessman Gerald Weisfeld has died at the age of 79.

The entrepreneur who founded What Every Woman Wants with wife Vera had been suffering from a long illness, his family said. He was members of his family when he passed away on Monday morning. Weisfeld had been living with dementia in Bothwell Castle Care Home since December 2018.

London-born Weisfeld, who left school at 15 without qualifications, founded What Every Woman Wants in  Glasgow  in 1971. It grew to more than 130 stores across the UK before the couple sold the company for £50 million. In 1996, they opened the department store Weisfelds in Glasgow's Merchant City in an attempt to recapture the old magic.

Weisfeld, who had three children from a previous marriage, was also known for his work for charities in Israel.

Vera spoke of her sadness in November last year when the flagship What Everys building in Argyle Street was pulled down to make way for offices.

A spokesperson for the family said: “They are requesting privacy at this time.”
