What every dog owner needs to know when walking their pet in winter weather

Dog owners are being warned about potential health problems for pups as a result of winter gritting.

As temperatures remain low across the North East, it's not only important to keep your dog warm when out and about in this weather but also to be mindful of where they're walking.

Local authorities are making preparations for the winter by stockpiling thousands of tonnes of salt and getting their gritters ready.

Now vets are warning that the grit itself could have hazardous consequences for pets, reports Glasgow Live.

A post shared on community Facebook group Lost Dogs Glasgow, published by ICR Veterinary Surgeons in Edinburgh, warns: "Beware Dog owners. Salt and sand is being placed on streets and walkways.

"This can cause irritation and discomfort to dogs. In bad cases it can cause tissue dehydration and damage.

"Remember to wash your dog’s paws with some warm water when coming back from a walk."

Last month, advice was issued by Dogs' Trust Glasgow on how to keep dogs warm and safe this winter, with specific advice for taking your pooch along gritted walkways.

They said: "Make sure you wipe your dog’s legs and feet when you come indoors after a snowy walk.

"The grit from the roads can irritate their feet. Grit can also be dangerous if your dog licks its paws. Again, seek veterinary advice if you are concerned your dog may have licked or ingested any."

The RSPCA also warns that antifreeze and rock salt can be poisonous to pets .

It adds: "After walking your dog in areas that may have been gritted with rock salt ensure you wash their paws thoroughly."
