Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has thanked Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy for allowing him to stage Anthony Joshua’s clash with Oleksandr Usyk this weekend.
The heavyweight fight is set to take place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday afternoon with Watford-born boxer Joshua aiming to defend his WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO titles.
It is the first time that the stadium has hosted such an event, with the original intention of it being able to hold multiple sports and entertainment events throughout the calendar year following its opening in 2019.
Of course, the fight itself is surely set to match the blood and thunder of this weekend’s first north London derby of the season against Arsenal.
Promoter Hearn has expressed his gratitude towards Levy for staging the event - Joshua’s first stadium show since overcoming Alexander Povetkin at Wembley Stadium back in 2018.
Talking in a press conference ahead of the bout, he said: “I think it’s important that we thank Daniel Levy and all the team at Tottenham as well, because that was some effort they’ve made to put this event on at this incredible stadium as well.”
The stadium itself has a seated capacity of 62,850, with the club’s record attendance for a football game having been 61,104 for a clash against Chelsea back in December 2019.
That number looks set to be exceeded this weekend though, with the fight thought to be gathering a huge crowd.
Away from boxing however, it has also been announced that the stadium itself is set to host the 2022 Rugby League Challenge Cup Final - an event scheduled for Saturday, May 22.
