What eating in two popular Edinburgh all-you-can-eat buffet restaurants looks like post-lockdown

Buffets aren't often known for being social distancing friendly at the best of times - so what happens now to the popular restaurant model post-lockdown?

Two of Edinburgh's favourite all-you-can-eat restaurants have returned from lockdown - but both have very different set ups.

Fazenda

Open-plan Brazillian buffet restaurant Fazenda on George Street is back on August 5th - but don't expect to graze from the huge salad and charcuterie bar we all loved.

Guests will be subject to temperature checks on arrival and asked to sanitize their hands.

The famous double-sided cards (red for 'I'm full right now', green for 'more meat please') are still operational and the chefs (passadores) will continue to bring out skewers of sizzling meats one by one.

However, each section of the restaurant will have a dedicated passador - so you'll be served from the same person instead of the huge rotating team.

And - sob - it's the end of the salad bar as we know it. No more filling your plate with piles of charcuterie, salad and cheese. Instead sides will be served directly to you from a new menu. There won't be any menus out either, they're all digital.

You can see the new menu and make a booking at Fazenda here.

Beijing Banquet

The iconic Chinese buffet restaurant - with branches in Sighthill and Danderhall - has also had to adapt, but they will still have an open buffet option for diners.

Customers will have the option of serving themselves at the controlled buffet service area - but customers will be asked wear their own face coverings and the restaurant will provide disposable gloves for you to wear when entering the buffet area.

Beijing Banquet will limit the amount of people at the buffet at each time, with social distancing markers throughout the buffet in a one-way system.

The Sighthill branch is reopening on 30 July and the Danderhall branch on 3 August - to read more about the restaurant's safety measures click here.
