What does Yom Kippur mean to you?

The old and the new - a time to reflect

Sundown on Tuesday 22 September marks the beginning of Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, when Jews around the world seek atonement for sins and reflect on both the preceding year and the year ahead of them. It is a 24 hour period of fasting and praying until dark on Wednesday 23 September, with synagogue attendance rates suggesting that more people go to temple on Yom Kippur than any other holiday.

How are you preparing for Yom Kippur? Are you spending the Day of Atonement with your family and friends? Why is it important to you? Have any of the traditions in your family changed over the years? Wherever you are in the world we’d like you to share your experiences. We’ll feature the best contributions on the site.

You can share your photos, videos and stories with us by clicking on the blue ‘Contribute’ buttons. You can also use the Guardian app, just search for ‘GuardianWitness assignments.’
