What does the addition of Minkah Fitzpatrick mean for the Steelers roster?

The Pittsburgh Steelers had one of the most eventful days in recent history on Monday. First they placed quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on IR with an elbow injury. Then they followed it up by making something of a blockbuster trade to land former Miami Dolphins defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick.

This is a huge move for the Steelers and clearly a sign the Steelers have not given up on the 2019 season. But the addition of Fitzpatrick got us thinking about what his role will be and how he will impact this defense.

Fitzpatrick has a reputation for being able to excel in multiple roles on defense. He also has a reputation for not wanting to play multiple roles on defense. He didn’t like the idea of learning six different spots on defense including two linebacker positions. I’m sure the Steelers have spoken to Fitzpatrick and his agent about where he will play and they are aware of his concerns.

What does Fitzpatrick do best? Statistically speaking, his strongest position is as a slot cornerback. This isn’t a need for the Steelers as they already have one of the top slot cornerbacks in the AFC in Mike Hilton.

Fitzpatrick is also very good as a boundary cornerback. Pittsburgh already has Joe Haden and Steven Nelson as the starters so this probably isn’t where the Steelers see him at least in the short run.

This leaves free safety. Sean Davis continues to struggle with injuries and mediocre play. If there’s a guy who should be looking over his shoulder it is him. Fitzpatrick paired up with Terrell Edmunds would give the Steelers the best safety tandem since Troy Polamalu and Ryan Clark.

Where do you see Fitzpatrick playing in the Steelers’ defense?
